we know that lots of folks saying michelle obama knocked it out of the park, bill clinton and obama obama were no slouches either, of course, so who other than someone named clinton or obama really impressed you? >> i think that one of the other speeches that really stuck out for me, and i know was a big hit at the convention and with folks around the country was our keynote speaker, the first latino ever for a dnc keynote speaker, julian castro. and he really, i think, impressed the crowd not just with his personal story, but with his argument about how his personal story was not just the quintessential american story, but it was a story that was possible only in this great country and that the opportunities that were available to him to make him successful are the opportunities that are at stake in this election and that it was obama's policies that he's put in place and will continue to put in place to make sure that that american dream that he is now fulfilling is going to be available to everybody, regardless of how much money you make, where you come from, what family you were born

this is how i saw it when michelle obama first entered the arena. she took a look to see what it would look like from the stage. and two weeks ago, who would have thought that weather would threaten to completely disrupt these carefully laid plans. and of course it did. it canceled one night of the republican convention and forced the democratic convention inside. this is what topical isaac looked like from my hotel room. so as bill clinton said in 1988, in closing, if you need more proof that conventions still matter, they're still fun and are still fascinating, if you need more proof that you really can't touch this, i offer you this, mc hammer. see, conventions do matter. if you want to see more of these pictures, come visit our blog, cnn.com/earlystart. we have more pictures there. worth looking at. all right. moving back now, one of the most inspirational stories from this year's u.s. open, it isn't from a tennis player. it's from military vet who has overcome the oddsputee and is now a ball assist taptan to. an amazing story. go to cnn.com/tv.

no one could tell it as eloqu t eloquently as you did, michelle, on monday night. but i know him, to state the obvious from a different perspective, i know him and i want to show you -- i want to show you the character of a leader who had what it took when the american people literally stood on the brink of a new depression. a leader who has what it takes to lead us over the next four years to a future as great as our people. i want to take you inside the white house to see the president as i see him every day, because i don't see him in sound bytes. i walk 30 paces down the hall into the oval office and i see him, i watch him in action. four years ago, the middle class was already losing ground and then the bottom fell out. the financial crisis hit like a sledge hammer on all the people i grew up with. you remember the headlines. you saw some of them in the previews. highlight. highest job losses in 60 years. headlines. economy on the brink. markets plummet worldwide. from the very moment president obama sat behind the desk resolute in the oval office, he knew. he

we've seen first lady michelle obama on her feet as well. let's listen. >> my dad joined the army air corps in 1940 as an enlisted man fixing bombers in world war ii. he served in the strategic air command. my mother was a volunteer for the uso. and later as a widow she raised five children. in the years since, i've been privileged to lead and serve with members of this next great generation. i see in them tough bright courageous inspiring men and women. i see this country's future leaders. these service members had been to some of the bleakest corners of the globe. they know how good this country is. they know firsthand what america means to the world. and they're going to bring to us the next great moment in our nation's history. because the president is standing with them. tonight, we are standing here with you. we are standing with our president. the men and women on this stage are only a small sample of this amazing generation. americans from texas, from virginia, from florida, from oregon, maine. new york. hawaii. north carolina. all a
